I draw out the emotion from motion, romance from the mundane, the lasting narrative from the moment.
Bitan Photo is me, David J. Toman. I’m quiet but restless, easily at home, and always challenging how I see and feel about our world.
I’m a longtime resident of Taiwan born and raised in New York. Art lives inside of me, and I first encountered China and things Chinese as a member of a US-China youth art exchange. That led me to studying Chinese and advanced studies in Taiwan…
A lifetime of drawing and painting, and competing at a high level in baseball, ice hockey, long distance running, and triathlon gives me particularly keen insight and appreciation for the beauty of sport, the color and atmosphere of competition, and the mindset of athletes both during and outside of competition. This dynamic approach to fluid developments also translates particularly well to capturing the emotion and poetry of milestone events like bridal sessions, weddings, and family celebrations.
I’m a Pisces, a reputedly romantic species. That romance comes out in my photographs.
I have been commissioned by online and print magazines, leading cycling apparel brand Rapha, and active eyewear brand 720armour, to name a few.
When I’m not photographing sporting events like triathlons, marathons, ultra races, or cycling on weekends I stay busy with studio portrait and product photography, as well as personal work such as my street portrait project.
